What’ve you got … I got a box of chocolates
What’ve you got … A bottle of wine
What’ve you got … I got a handlebar mustache
What’ve you got … Too much time
What’ve you got … I got a nice warm jacket
What’ve you got … This tree to climb
What’ve you got … I got a wicker basket
What’ve you got … You on my side
What’ve you lost … I lost all my friendships
What’ve you lost … My favorite shoes
What’ve you lost … Awe, I lost my grip, man
What’ve you lost … Most of my blues
What’ve you lost … I lost all my money
What’ve you lost … Oh I lost my way
What’ve you lost … My big pot of honey
What’ve you lost … I lost something to say
What’ve you got … I got a slice of pizza
What’ve you got … Opinions to turn
What’ve you got … I got an ice cold soda
What’ve you got … All these things to earn
What’ve you got … I got a box of matches
What’ve you got … All these bridges to burn
What’ve you got … I got too much believing
What’ve you got … All these things to learn
What’ve you got … I got a box of chocolates
What’ve you got … A bottle of wine
What’ve you got … I got a handlebar mustache
What’ve you got … Nothing but time
What’ve you got … I got a hot new jacket
What’ve you got … A big tree to climb
What’ve you got … I got a wicker basket
What’ve you got … You on my side

Who’s knocking at my door?
I wasn’t expecting, I don’t believe you
Mine is buried under the floor
I’m just collecting, what else should I do?
Now you’re gonna hear me roar
Go on and do it, is this even real?
You got me rattled to my core
Hand on the pistol
Hand on the steering wheel
----------------------------------------------------------
I’m leaning back in my chair
You should be providing, you should provide more
Playing and the cards are laid bare
Why are you waiting? What are you waiting for?
I hear you fine but I don’t care
Hand on the lever
Hand breaking the seal
A target, let me steel my stare
Hand on the pistol
Hand on the steering wheel
----------------------------------------------------------
I’m probably going to throw a fit
You keep talking fair. What in the hell is fair?
The signal fire has been lit
O man the wreckage, who sent up the flare?
Not sure it’s something I can quit
Hand on the heart,
Hand reaching to feel
A flash of fingers flip the switch
Hand on the pistol,
Hand on the steering wheel
----------------------------------------------------------
Who’s moving in next door?
I wasn’t expecting, I don’t believe you
My feet are resting on the floor
I’m just reflecting, what else should I do?
Now you’re gonna hear me roar
I know I can do it, no way this is real
You got me rattled to my core
Hand on the pistol
Hand on the steering wheel

Bury Me in Denver

Bury Me in Denver
Now I’m sharp and cold as a butcher’s knife
Perhaps I’m ready now to take on a wife
I’ll let you stab me still and stab me right
Another moment with you and I’ll die and die
And I’ll be buried well smiling at the sky
_____________________________________
Cause maybe the time spent with everyone else
Was just a contrast of what I knew of myself
But if your trail was closer to me
Who knows who I might have turned out to be
But thinking like that doesn;t help me see
The road up ahead
_____________________________________
My handkerchief rags and my boots are worn
A helluva a ride from mountain air to lakeshore
I remember you best under the city's elm trees
As I jumped a train eastbound to Milwaukee
But when I left you I no longer knew me
Oh, goddamn these Denver doldrums
Their stifling stillness has run me gone
The stars that aligned used to call my name
Now they’ve all novad into crying shames
When I look all it all seems aflame

But, I'm an Artist
03:35
|
|||
But, I’m an Artist
Once again I stayed up late/ So I could have another drink
A sly way for me to pretend/ That I’m a diggin’ deep thinker
Or is just another way/ For me to skip out on sleep
Where my dreams are just some sad fantasy island of a drinker
But isn’t this how art is made, exploring the hours we ignore
Emotions we rarely taste, with the precision of a tinker?
When I consider that someone right now is dying
And I’m here telling myself that I’m probably lying
And all the screamers in hell, ticklish with their violence
It’s hard for me to ignore the world’s perfect silence
Then the minutes go unheard/ Friends and family start to seep in
Another hour with this word/ I think it’ll lose its meaning.
The colors take their shape, my loneliness starts to sink in
Goddamn it’s getting late but my eyes have stopped blinkin’
Is this how art is made? Exploring the hours you abhor?
Emotions can lose their taste, maybe I should stop drinkin’
How I’ve tried to bury it all away/ It’s not like I really have something to say
Maybe someone will notice it today/ Who the hell knows? It’s coming out either way
Then the eyelids start to drift, another wasted evening
Should I even write this down, right now I could be dreaming
But if I don’t finish this here, it’ll never start breathing
She turns over in bed, such an empty feeling
This is how art is made, another creaking floor
An artist’s masquerade, I guess this is believing

Circle (For Milo, Sufi, Samson)
Are you lonely, are you lonely, are you worried about where you're going?
Or are you swimming in the lake?
What a journey, are you worried, about where you’re going, how's it going?
What if there's a slight mistake?
The shape of a circle is the best that we can do
So ride the perfect curvature and you will become you
The past is mostly a promise of the truth
Let's raise a mast and sail and see if you can break on through
Go ahead and trust your feelings, trust the seasons, you should believe 'em
You will know by swimming in the lake
Grow a garden, beg a pardon, try to never go too far in, love till you make a slight mistake
Nothing will be easy what's asked of you
It will seem like every angle is lit by the moon
The past is mostly a promise of the truth
Let's raise a mast and sail and see if you can break on through
Are you lonely, are you lonely, are you worried about where you're going?
Or are you swimming in the lake?
What a journey, are you worried, about where you’re going, how's it going?
What if there's a slight mistake?
There's so much I wish I could explain to you
And still the hours I have left to learn could fill a book or two
The past is mostly a promise of the truth
Let's raise a mast and sail and see if you can break on through
But there's so much I wish I could explain to you
But there's so much I wish I could say to you
Raise a mast and sail and see if you can break on through

Medley
The inches between only added to it all
The shadows that hung around her could not prevent the fall
But I'll try, try, try…though I could not say this to her eyes
I'd rather die, die, die, than love a stranger in the skies
It was dawn, the church bells still hung, aching to ring but first must come the son
The steeple sneered, looking down at me below, truly believing, that's all you need to know
And the willow, it's roots just holding on, ready to topple, the river moving along
But at the dock, the boat just swayed its sway, I'll up the oars, work my back when the confluence cascades my way
A curse echoed through, but she was nowhere near
The spring time snow once made it all so crystal clear
But I will go, go , go when the leaves fall from her tree
She'll say no, no, till the madness is at ease
New year comes, and the mighty Fitz was brought to its knees
Even the Sault at St. Marie shut her eyes, cried, “Please, be a dream!”
But it was gone, gone, gone, before a soul could be saved
I was wrong, wrong, wrong, to think it would work out another way

misanthrope (or how to murder a rhyme)
you saw the sun you saw the sun/ you thought it was god when you saw the sun
you raised that tool and spilled the blood/ you farmed the land you knew you had won
you counted the stars but you were the only one/ you built a wheel and carried on and on
you rode a wave until space was gone/ you learned the sea so you could cut and run
what have you done …
you dug up some gold and declared it law/you toppled the land but didn’t watch it fall
you lied and said he was the only son/ you wrote it down in stone for the museum
you stole the light and put it in a gun/ you stole the land you knew you had won
you put numbers to page and then god succumbed/ you bent waves of light and set foot to drum
what have you done …
you put some in chains to keep up the fun/ you put more in cages by the ton
you burned the decay and added up the sum/ you rode on the air and declared where you were from
you built to the sky just to stand above/ you blew up the world to show how far you’d come
you walked on the moon another ladder rung/ you bought up the waves for your serpent tongue
what have you done …
you cleaned it up pretty but for only some/ you pulled the wool tight until your eye was numb*
you heard some cry out and so you have begun/ to elevate your sins from underneath your thumb*
you put it all out from the mountain top/ you sang the loudest song that you can never stop*
you danced on the graves in the shade of the sun/ you danced on the graves to a modern anthem*
what have you done …

Flow
Well, I’ve seen a women on the river bed, she drank too much and then she was dead, oh no
And further down my own mother cried, but just inside till she was 45, it’s too late
But I don’t want to see you girl where the flow gets rough and the water spills, down down
I met a man who told me twice, live while you’re young, it’s twice as nice. Oh yeah? Oh yeah …
I saw that man further down the shore, drinking his gin, looking twice as old, wrinkled skin
But I don’t want to see you girl where the flow gets rough and the water spills, down down
So river if you must take my gal, keep her afloat and keep her well, she’s my love
And if you turn white and treat her unkind, let my raft be the first in line, please please
‘Cause I don’t want to see you girl where the flow gets rough and the water spills, down, down
So know before you jump, if you don’t look, you might not come back up, drown drown
And if that’s true, if that must be, reach your hand up and it’ll be me, love love
‘Cause I don’t want to see you girl where the flow gets rough and the water spills, down, down

Chili

Chili, chili, chili, chili
I love chili, I know that sounds silly
O! Veggies and sauces and spices and meat!
Cook it in a pot, doesn't that sound neat?
Chili, chili, chili, chili
Pass some chili, do it really really quickly
I know it doesn't look all too appetizing
But it'll warm your belly without compromising
Chili, chili, chili, chili
Serve me some chili like a Michigan hillbilly
No bowls or flatware or anything nice
Mugs and paper cups will perfectly suffice
Chili, chili, chili, chili
Load up my chili with something really filling
O! Give me that texture of crackers and cheese
Stir it till it melts then give it back to me, please!
Chili, chili, chili, chili, chili, chil-e
Chili, chili, chili, chili, chili, chil-e
